Pastor's Column

Turning Inner Freedom Into Outer Reality!

We are always in the process of understanding how powerful our inner spiritual being is. This is experienced on a personal level and a larger corporate level.

During President Obama's Inauguration ceremony to be the 44th U.S. President (in 2009), I found several aspects highly symbolic. Not only symbolic of how far we've come on with civil freedom, but also hinting at the freedom of our inner being.

The Pastor reminded us of a scripture which refers to our Spirit Loved Ones being all around us, as he said about the President , "Dr. King and a host of witnesses are watching him today". Wow! Our spirit people can really appreciate the freedom WE enjoy today. It is beautiful to see people across the globe understanding that we are all spiritual beings, regardless of color, caste, or culture. We are overcoming prejudice and negativity more than ever.

The ceremony's musical portion offered a rendition of our old spiritualist Shaker tune, Simple Gifts. What a profound statement to make at a historic moment, in such a place of power! The freedom movement, carried by the metaphysical and spiritualist movements of the 1800's, is eloquently shared in the lyrics of Simple Gifts:

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'Tis the gift to be free

'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be, And when we find ourselves in the

place just right, It will be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gained, To bow and to bend we will not be ashamed

To turn, turn will be our delight, Till by turning, turning, We come 'round right.

The most profound gift to all souls is the simple gift of freedom. Are you experiencing freedom from fears, limitations, and negative thinking? Certainly our spiritual inner being thrive in a state of freedom to be, freedom to think and to create, to co-create with All That Is!

Freedom starts in your thoughts, bubbles out into actions and becomes the rewards of new creations!- In Love, Rev. Drew Vogt, Senior SCOL Pastor

The SCOL Board is excited to announce our first ever SCOL Members & Friends Directory! This color directory will be a great way for you to remember faces, connect, network, and to get to know each other. It will also have a business directory in the back, if you'd like to advertise your own work.

Flyers will be available to provide your contact information, or business listing.

It's quick and easy! Come to one of the photo dates. First come first served. Flyers to provide Directory information or Business listings are available in the office or Center lobby. Deadline for all entries is July 10th.

Considering a Membership at SCOL?

Our spiritual family is a joy for many! Often folks ask about how to become members, so we'd like to explain how simple it is in 5 easy steps:

1. First, we offer a free Basic Concepts Class at least twice per year, comprised of two or three condensed classes on our beliefs and history, usually taught by our Senior Pastor Rev. Drew Vogt. Attendance at these is required for SCOL membership and allows us a chance to get to know each other; however, attending does not require you to become a member.

2. Upon completion of the Basic Concepts Class, ask a SCOL member to be your Sponsor.

3. Fill out a blue SCOL Petition for Membership card, and a letter or short explanation about your reason for joining. These cards are usually available in the lobby or office.

4. Submit this to us via the offering plate, church office, or to one of our staff members for Board Approval at our monthly meeting.

5. Upon approval, we will contact you to set a date for you New Members Ceremony. This is comprised of a short candle lighting ceremony which is usually a part of one of the Sunday services.

Lastly, in accordance with the Bylaws to be  a voting member, you must be a member for 6 months and attend at least two services per month. If you have any questions regarding membership, please contact Rev. Drew or any of our Board of Directors. We look forward to welcoming you!

Children's Sunday Circle

Many thanks to all of our teachers and assistants for the excellent program they have produced this past year! Maria Andrasi, Kathy Powers, Jody Smith, Karin Strauss, Liz Adams, Laura Warnelo, Sadie Muniz and Joyce Chalmers have donated hours of their time to help all of our children grow and thrive.

As summer unfolds, the Board has decided to make a few changes in order to continue our program. For the month of July, we will provide child care only. There will be no structured learning program during the Sunday morning service. For the month of August, there will be no child care provided. This gives our teachers an opportunity to take a break and relax with their families.

Beginning in September, we will be structuring our program for our children ages 2 years through 11 years. We are aware that the learning needs of children change when they begin middle school, so we will be focusing on our younger children. This change will encourage our "tweens" and teen-agers to attend and participate in services in the sanctuary. We will be meeting in August to plan for the fall program. If you have an interest and 90 minutes to volunteer, we will welcome your participation. Please let any of us know of your interest.

Love and Light to all, Rev. Julie Fox
